The most talked about vehicle over the past year, even prior to its launch was Mahindra’s so-called global SUV which as everyone now knows manifested itself as the XUV500. The term global SUV is a misnomer for this is a vehicle which blurs the distinction between saloon, SUV or soft-roader and also MPV while being right on the ball as regards design and build, mechanicals and packaging, ride and handling, performance and fuel efficiency. However, what is important is that all these attributes which we mention are always a given for any decent car maker offering an all-new product.

But for Mahindra & Mahindra it was also a mighty challenge to move into mainstream automotive manufacturing courtesy the XUV500 breaking new ground as the firm’s first all-monocoque offering, the first Mahindra with a transverse engine layout driving the front wheels (of course an all-wheel drive offering is also part of the range) via a six-speed transaxle, again a first for the venerable jeep maker.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Dubai International Motor Show2011 has reported spectacular sales, drawing record crowds to not only admire,but also buy cars from some of the most impressive brands in the world. ShelbySupercars, who participated at the show purely to raise brand recognition, endedup selling a stunning ten Tuatara models valued at US$1.3 million (AED4.8 million) each.

The 11^th edition of the show generated deals across the board,with economy, mid-range, luxury and supercar exhibitors all reporting anexcellent response in terms of footfall, leads and sales, with many describingtheir results on a par with the Motor Show boom year of 2007.

JerodShelby, founder of Shelby Supercars (SSC), said the results of exhibiting atthe show were far greater than he could have imagined: “Thishas been a huge show for us – we’ve sold ten cars, which is phenomenal. Ourexpectation was nothing more than to create awareness of the brand in thisregion and find a distributor, but this has been amazing. The business has beenoutstanding.”

As the DubaiInternational Motor Show closed its doors on an exceptional show, the event’sglobal importance is becoming even more obvious to worldwide exhibitors: “Ofall the trade shows I’ve been to around the world, this has been phenomenal.Breaking into a new market like this is a hard thing to do and this show hasbeen outstanding in helping us to achieve that. The exhibition and theorganisation has truly been world class,” said AlanLeverett, Chief Administrative Officer, Shelby.

While theShelby sales made a new record for supercars, the 2011 show has also been asell-out success for many of the ultra-premium marques. Lamborghini, with theregional launch of the exceptional Aventador LP 700-4, was among one of thebusiest in terms of both footfall and contracts, with well over AED17 millionworth of sales conducted during the course of the show.

“Thisyear was an exceptional motor show for us, and the sales results were wellabove expectations. The world class quality and reputation of the Lamborghinibrand fits in perfectly with many of the visitors to the show. To have sold 14 modelsfrom one of the most famous names in the motoring industry in five days is acredit both to our brand and to the world class quality of the Dubai motorshow,” said Abdul Rehman Al Jaziri, Managing Director, Al Jaziri Motors,exclusive distributors of Lamborghinis in the UAE.

ForPorsche, the star of the show was the redesigned 911 Carrera, which took centrestage on a stand with some of the marque’s latest models. George Wills,Managing Director of Porsche Middle East and Africa, said the show had been agreat platform: “As a result of a very busy show for Porsche, we now havebulging order book for this truly head-turning vehicle.”

With manymanufacturers witnessing unprecedented levels of interest in their latestmodels and groundbreaking technologies during the five day event, the show hasreflected a phenomenal year of growth for the automotive industry in theregion.

Over 100,000 visitors streamed into the DubaiInternational Convention and Exhibition Centre over the course of the show whichcovered more than 60,000 m² of exhibition spacewith 150 companies participating from over 30 countries.

“The sales from this year’s Dubai InternationalMotor Show have surpassed the expectations of many of the exhibitors andreflect the extremely high level of consumer confidence across the GCC ingeneral and the UAE in particular. From mid-size family saloons to some of theunique supercars, we have seen some of the highest volumes of sales on thestands in recent years and the number of worldwide launches and regionalpremieres illustrate the show’s significance to the international motoringindustry,” said Helal Saeed Almarri, CEO, Dubai World Trade Centre, organiserof the event.

With an impressive nine global launches and morethan 50 regional premiers, the five dayextravaganza included the latest and greatest from some of the world’s mostwell-known motoring brands, including Audi,Aston Martin, Bugatti, Bentley, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ferrari,Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Lamborghini, Land Rover,Lexus, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, McLaren, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche, Peugeot,Renault, Rolls Royce, Toyota, Volkswagen andVolvo.

"It is a reflection of the importance of theMiddle East market for General Motors that a vehicle as important asTrailBlazer is making its global debut at this show,” said John Stadwick,President and Managing Director of GM Middle East Operations.

Given that the Middle East luxury car segment is forecast to doubleby 2015, high-end manufacturers were keen to connect with the receptive targetaudience the show is famed for attracting. With sales signed and sealed onalmost every single stand, manufacturers were unanimous in their praise for theshow.

Commentingon BMW Group’s participation, Joerg Breuer, Managing Director, BMW Group MiddleEast said: “The Motor Show was awell-organised event that was extremely successful for both our BMW and MINIbrands in terms of visitor’s response and sales. For BMW, we sold almost allour BMW Individual Series Limited Edition cars produced to celebrate the UAE’s40^th anniversary.”

Manufacturersin the mid-range segment were equally buoyed by the phenomenal success of theshow this year. Mark Kass, Regional Managing Director, Al-Futtaim outlined thehighlights of the show for Japanese manufacturer Honda: “It has been an extremely successful Motor Showfor us at Honda – both in terms of the visitor turnout and sales leads. Werevealed the 2012 Honda Pilot and Honda City, models that have been themainstay of not just the brand, but have been cars of choice for thousands ofUAE residents.”

Frenchautomaker Peugeot reported keen interest from a broad range of visitors andbrisk trading. Jeremy Weatherill,Divisional Manager for the company said: “Dubai International Motor Show was a highly successful event for Peugeot– we sold over 100 Peugeot 207 models at the show itself.”

Simon Frith, Managing Directorof Al-Futtaim Toyota agreed: “The Dubai InternationalMotor Show is the biggest event for the industry in the Middle East. Over theyears it has become a platform that enables us to interact with customers fromdifferent age groups and backgrounds in a totally different way than theclassic showroom visits.”

With visitors thronging thehalls from the very first hour of opening, exhibitors enjoyed record crowdswith genuine interest on their respective stands. Chrysler’s Managing Director, Jack Rodencalcommented: “We are very pleased with the number of visitors this year. DubaiInternational Motor Show is the best platform to showcase our unique models,with sales at an all time high.”

Exhibitorsfrom all corners of the world, and all segments of the industry, were impressedby the bi-annual automotive event and many have already committed to attend thenext edition in 2013.

Al Tayer Motors, one of the UAE’s premier automobile dealerships and exclusive Ferrari importer-dealer, is showcasing the Ferrari 458 Spider at the Dubai International Motor Show.

Ferrari’s exciting new 8-cylinder convertible, the 458 Spider, shares the spotlight with the Ferrari FF and an exclusive customised Ferrari California that epitomises the new Tailor-Made programme announced by Ferrari.

458 Spider

The latest addition to the Ferrari range is a mid-rear-engined two-seater featuring a fully retractable aluminium hard-top, a world first for a sports car with this layout.

The 458 Spider’s innovative new hard-top is not only 25 kg lighter than a traditional folding soft-top, but is also quieter and thermally more efficient when raised. Aside from taking just 14 seconds to open or close, the hard-top was engineered to occupy a very small space when stored so that the designers were able to include a generous rear bench for luggage behind the two seats.

The rear windscreen doubles as an effective wind-stop which is electrically adjustable. When the hard-top is folded away the wind-stop opens to the height that guarantees the most efficient aerodynamics, reducing buffeting in the cockpit.

The 458 Spider is powered by Ferrari’s 570 CV 4,499 cc V8 which was named International Engine of the Year 2011. This is coupled with Ferrari’s class-leading dual-clutch F1 paddle-shift transmission which delivers 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in under 3.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 320 km/h.

The all-aluminium chassis incorporates new alloys and castings, also adopted on the coupé, which ensure the 458 Spider already conforms to 2020 safety legislations.

Its category-topping performance aside, the new car also boasts class-leading fuel consumption and emissions levels. Thanks to the HELE (High Emotion Low Emission) system, in fact, fuel consumption on the combined urban cycle stands at 11.8 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 275 g/km.

Tailor-Made Programme

Ferrari stand also has an area dedicated to the Tailor-Made Programme, which enables owners to reach an even more personal level of distinctiveness with the specification of their cars.

The Tailor-Made Programme provides clients with an extensive range of exclusive cloth trim, colours, finishes and technical materials for a final specification inspired by unique classic Ferraris and by motor racing. The selection is available in three innovative collections - Classica, Scuderia and Inedita – specifically conceived by Ferrari’s Styling centre.

In creating a truly bespoke car clients will be assisted by their own Personal Designer throughout the decision-making process, right up until delivery. The Carrozzeria Scaglietti programme continues the range of personalisation options open to clients.

The 2011 Dubai International Motor Show, the largest event in the show’s 22 year history, was officially opened today by H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai. More than 150 of the world’s top motoring manufacturers are showcasing a record number of global and regional launches at the Motor Show along with some of the most exciting and innovative concept cars in the world.

Lexus 2012 models to raise benchmark on luxury offerings in the UAE

Al-Futtaim Motors, exclusive distributors of Lexus in the UAE, has announced the arrival of the much anticipated 2012 models which are expected to raise the benchmark for luxury automobile offerings in the UAE.

Focusing on engaging the senses of its customers and appealing to a young and new generation, Lexus’s new 2012 model range demonstrates the brand’s shift from its traditional attributes of luxurious refinement to a real focus on sharper style and emotional appeal.

The 2012 Lexus models are inspired by the L-finesse philosophy and certain models even get the muscular edge with the optional sports package. The IS 250 and the IS 300 models receive an optional sportier appearance package while the GX 460 transitions into 2012 with many enhanced sport front and rear appearance features.

Another big change for this year’s model line-up is the new colour palate. All IS sedan models, the hybrid models and the ES 350 will get Mercury Gray as a new exterior colour option replacing the Dark Gray. The ES 350 gets its own Starlight Black replacing the Deep Peridot while the IS exclusively gets Fire Agate replacing the Bluish Pearl as an exterior colour. The Orange/Black combination seating and interior theme is also replaced by an all-new Red and Black two-tone leather trim in the ISF.

The new 2012 Honda Pilot made its public debut yesterday at the Dubai International Motor Show. With a new styling for front facia and refined instrument panel, the 8-seater SUV receives significant improvements in exterior and interior styling.

For the 2012 model other significant improvements include the introduction of top-of-the-line Touring grade and includes new features like HDD navigation system, DVD rear entertainment system, intelligent MID (i-MID), wide mode rear view camera, Bluetooth hands free phone and Bluetooth Audio Streaming, 18” alloy wheels and many more.

REFINED EXTERIOR & INTERIOR STYLING

POWERTRAIN

The 2012 Pilot is equipped with 3.5 – liter i-VTEC V6 engine with VCM technology to ensure optimal balance of power and fuel efficiency. The maximum (NET) power and torque output (NET) is 257 PS @ 5,700 rpm and 35.4 kg-m @ 4,800 rpm – respectively.

The Pilot engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission system that has Grade Logic Control to maintain the appropriate gear thus preventing gear “hunting” while uphill or downhill drive. The VTM-4 system on Pilot delivers seamless 4-wheel-drive when needed. The VTM-4 system also provides a "lock mode" (available when in first or second gears up to 28 kmph) which is activated by a button on the instrument panel. In “lock model” the VTM-4 delivers maximum possible torque transfer to the rear wheels which aids extraction from extremely low traction or stuck conditions.

SAFETY

The principal safety feature used on all Honda models is the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure for enhanced frontal collision energy management and vehicle-to-vehicle frontal crash compatibility.

Standard on all grades, the passive safety features include dual-stage front airbags, side airbags, 3-row/ full length side curtain airbags and front active head restraints. The side curtain airbag system includes three satellite sensors and a main unit, and detects a crash within 5-7 milliseconds. It also includes a rollover sensor which deploys the airbags if there is a risk of vehicle overturning.

Another important feature is the LATCH system with 4 locations in securing child seats. This gives flexibility to both parents and children to choose their seats.

Available as standard, the active safety features include Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), 4-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and Hill Start Assist (HSA). The HSA maintain brake pressure momentarily longer and prevent roll-back as the driver moves from the brake to accelerator pedal during a hill start.

Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System

Available on Touring grade, the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System features an 8-inch, high-resolution QVGA color display and uses GPS technology to provide guidance to destinations. The world’s premium marques join a full list of international exhibitors preparing to unveil their latest models, concept cars and technological innovations during the five day event running from 10–14 November 2011 at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

According to IHS Automotive, figures released by the leading luxury car manufacturers indicate that sales of luxury cars in the Middle East are expected to increase by 20% this year - the highest level ever and more than double the 9.7 percent growth that the Middle East luxury segment experienced last year. It is also predicted that, if the pattern continues, the Middle East luxury car segment will double over the period 2010-2015 positioning the region as a global leader within this lucrative market.

Hot Rod Fuller Smashes Two Personal Bests in the Yas Marina Circuit

In the third and fourth qualifying rounds of the Uni-Select Auto Plus NHRA Nationals in Reading, Pennsylvania over the weekend, Hot Rod Fuller, in the Yas Marina Circuit Top Fuel Dragster ran the fastest time of his career to date. Rod came in under the esteemed 3.8 second Elapsed Time (ET) mark, with an ET of 3.785 seconds.

Rod also broke his highest speed record, for the second time this season. Set just weeks ago in Minnesota, Fuller reached a speed of 325mph, beating his previous best by nearly 3mph.

These efforts positioned the Yas Marina Circuit Top Fuel Drag Team in a respectable fifth place leading into the eliminations, only to smoke the tyres and be knocked out in the first round.

“We made our career quickest and fastest pass, which says a lot for this team. I’m so proud of all of the Yas Marina Circuit guys, especially with how well we’ve done these last couple of races. We struggled on race day, but we really moved up and we’re running with the top guys after only 8 races all season. You know, that’s nothing to hang our heads about,” commented Hot Rod Fuller.

“Getting above the 320mph barrier again, just goes to show that we have the speed; we just need to get everything to line up now. It’s frustrating that we haven’t won, but we know we have a car that can win,” he continued.

The team has only two races left in the ten race season, with Rod having previously performed well at both tracks. The next race will take place in Phoenix, Arizona from 14-16 October, followed by the final meet in Las Vegas at the end of October.

A UAE resident has bought a custom-made Bugatti L’Or Blanc – the world’s most expensive car in the world – for an estimated $2.4 million (Dh9 million).

According to a Bloomberg report, Bugatti – which makes the world’s fastest cars – has tied up with German porcelain maker KPM in order to fit in a porcelain caviar tray in the custom-made car. There is little known about the owner of the car except that he owns around 200 exotic cars.

"Installing porcelain in the world's fastest convertible car seems like a pretty odd idea... but Bugatti has made a name for itself by not shying away from extravagant ideas," said Stefan Brungs, Bugatti's sales chief.

The streamlined vehicle, which has a white exterior with royal blue lines, has also been fitted with porcelain wheel badges, fuel caps and oil caps.

The car was introduced recently in Berlin, Germany.

The most expensive car title was earlier held by Bugatti 300 Veyron 16.4s with an estimated price of $1.74 million.

Kia Naimo - electric concept car

Taking its name from the Korean word “Ne-mo”, (pronounced ‘Neh-mo’, meaning ‘square shape’), the Naimo electric crossover utility vehicle (CUV) was conceived by Kia’s international design team in Seoul, and is characterized principally by its simple lines and solid, muscular stance.

The uncomplicated overall design is accentuated by a number of striking key details, such as the wraparound windscreen and asymmetric sunroof design, and the front and rear dot-style LED head- and positioning-lamps. This juxtaposition of simple and complex is a common trait of many traditional Korean arts and crafts. Asian Celadon-style pottery, in particular, was a major influence on the car’s styling – with the pottery’s asymmetric form lending itself to the sunroof design, and the typical jade coloring giving Naimo its unique exterior finish.

Naimo’s interior was designed to evoke a strong sense of tranquility and features hand-crafted materials throughout. Korean oak is used to trim the interior door panels and the entire interior floor, Korean “Han-ji” paper is used for the head lining. Alongside these traditional elements sit modern features such as a TOLED (transparent organic light emitting diode) storming display instrument panel and full device connectivity.

Power comes from a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) electric motor with a maximum output of 80 kW (109 ps) and maximum torque of 280 Nm, enabling Naimo to reach a top speed of 150 kph (93 mph).

A twin-pack 27 kWh battery is located under the trunk floor and uses innovative LiPoly (Lithium Ion Polymer) technology that offers numerous advantages over other battery types. Equipped with this battery, Naimo provides a driving range of 200 km (124 miles) on a single charge. To enhance range, the showcar is fitted with special low-drag 20-inch diameter alloy wheels.

Under the quick recharging cycle (50 kW) the Naimo’s battery can be recharged to 80 percent of its capacity within 25 minutes.

New Audi A7 arrives in the UAE

Abu Dhabi/Dubai, March 21, 2011 – Ali & Sons Co LLC and Al Nabooda Automobiles, the authorized dealers of Audi in the UAE, announce the official launch of the new Audi A7 to the Emirates. Customers have the possibility of viewing Audi’s latest model on a specially designed exhibition area at Dubai Mall and Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi.

The new Audi A7 is a five-door luxury-class coupe with a unique combination of prestige, sportiness and functionality which blends together the benefits of a saloon, a coupe and a station wagon. On the interior Audi again gives proof of its leading role in automotive design. Even the tiniest details and the use of high-grade new materials document the craftsmanship level of care with which Audi builds its cars. The long rear hatch opens high to reveal a luggage compartment that is very easy to load and offers excellent functionality at 535-liter capacity.

The A7 offers a new level of technical intelligence with logical, self-explanatory ergonomics. The optimized MMI operating system with navigation plus and touchpad input comes standard. Among the optional equipment is the adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, that combined with the Audi pre sense safety system can reduce the severity of accidents and their consequences, the new head-up display, Audi active lane assist and the new park assist system, which relieves the driver of the chore of steering when parallel parking.

The settings of the new Audi A7 have been specially developed for the Middle East, particularly with regards to the climate conditions. Design

Audi is once again breaking new ground in design with the A7, whose lines convey aesthetic athleticism and elegance on a grand scale. The five-door coupe measures 4.97 meters in length and 1.91 meters in width, but only 1.42 meters in height. Its long engine hood, the sportily flowing C-pillars and the sharply dropping rear create a dynamic overall impression.

The A7 is an Audi in new top form. Its low, dynamically drawn roofline lends it the character of a coupe. The design presents the aesthetics of modern technology in every detail – in the sharp, precise stroke of the lines, for instance, or in the athletically taut surfaces. Up front, optional LED headlights accentuate the distinctive expression. They use light-emitting diodes to provide all functions and consume little energy. LED tail lights are standard.

The sinewy sportiness of the exterior carries over into the interior of the A7, where Audi again gives proof of its leading role in automotive design. The salient element is the “wrap-around” – a horizontal line encircling the driver and the front-seat passenger.

The arc extends from the driver’s side across the instrument panel to the passenger’s door. The instrument panel has a wave-shaped application strip and generates significant tension.

In the interior, even the tiniest details document the care with which Audi builds its cars. The quality of the workmanship is on a craftsman’s level. High-grade new materials such as layered wood veneers are a treat for the senses, and an optional ambient lighting system adds highlights to the interior. The front seats are available with optional ventilation and massage functions.

The five-door coupe from Audi combines supreme long-distance comfort with a sporty character. The interior noise level is very low even at high speeds, with the engine providing subtle acoustic feedback as their power unfolds. Behind the excellent acoustics are new structural design methods, the bundled use of high-end materials such as microfiber fleeces, and the systematic conceptual design of multifunction parts, such as acoustically active wheel well shells and underbody panels.

Cultivated atmosphere: excellent body characteristics

The cultivated atmosphere is due in part to the excellent vibrational comfort. This is the result of painstakingly tuning all components, systematic hydraulic damping in the axle and drivetrain bearings, and the extremely stiff body. Comprised primarily of aluminum and high-tech steels, it is exceptionally lightweight and very safe. The long rear hatch opens high to reveal a luggage compartment that is very easy to load and offers excellent functionality. Its ample standard 535-liter capacity swells to 1,390 liters with the rear seat rests folded down.

The A7 offers a new level of technical intelligence with logical, self-explanatory ergonomics. Datsun 240Z (1970)

Nissan's riposte to the sports cars that Porsche and BMW built, the Datsun 240Z (sold as the Nissan Fairlady Z in Japan) was a huge hit in the US because it was cheaper than the Teuton models which competed in its class. Stylish and zippy, the car was unlike the prosaic models that the Japanese routinely exported. The 240Z would eventually evolve into the now popular Nissan 370Z.

Aston Martin DBS (2008)

This is a tough one actually – we could think of two other Aston Martins that could have made the cut here. The classic DB5 that 007 drove in Goldfinger? The rakish good looks of the superb V8 Vantage? But in the end, it is the refined sophistication of the DBS that prevails. More grown-up than the Vantage, the elegant design belies the beastly nature of the car. The 6.0-litre V12 engine would keep any petrolhead happy and the stylish design means you would never leave home in your flip-flops and jeans. The DBS is a modern classic.

Citroën DS (1955)

In Fred Zinnemann's classic movie The Day of The Jackal, Edward Fox's stylish assassin may zip around the winding roads of the French Alps in an Alfa Romeo, but in the Paris scenes it is the Citroën DS – proudly corpulent and inimitably French – that gets true car lovers misty eyed, prompting French egghead Roland Barthes to compare it to a “great Gothic cathedral." We think Roland might have been a little overinflated with Gallic pride, but there's no doubt the DS was an object of curvaceous beauty.

Corvette Stingray (1963)

An enduring American classic, the Stingray was the first sports coupé to feature a divided rear window, coupé doors cut into the roof and a futuristic fastback design. Superbly engineered, the car quickly gained a reputation among racing enthusiasts. Quite a radical design for its time (the much revered Bill Mitchell gets design credits on this one), the Stingray is still among the most coveted cars for collectors and harks back to a time when some of the industry's most exciting cars were produced Stateside.

Ferrari 250 GT Spyder California SWB (1962)

Frequently topping 'Best Sports Car of all Time' lists, the Ferrari 250 in all its forms is the quintessential vintage Ferrari, the kind of gleaming chick-magnet that could turn an avowed anti-car campaigner into a drooling petrolhead at a glance. This one, owned by Hollywood legend James Coburn was sold to British radio DJ Chris Evans in 2008 for almost $11 million, and anyone familiar with seminal 1980s teen flick Ferris Bueller's Day Off will remember it as the car that gets trashed at the end.

Jaguar E-Type (1961)

To build on its LeMans 24 hours legacy, Jaguar's racing department was asked to build a sports car keeping in mind the marque's successful D-Type sports cars. Lamborghini Miura (1966)

Lamborghini understood 'shock and awe' way before the US military did. Geneva, March 02, 2011 – With several world premieres and appearances by legendary rally driver Michèle Mouton and a performance by singer Amy Macdonald German premium car manufacturer Audi has kicked off the 81st International Geneva Motor Show. The star of the show, however, was the Audi A3 concept. The four-seat notchback sedan integrates the full breadth of the brand’s technological expertise – from the improved MMI operating system, to the high-tech infotainment system, to the drivetrain. A five-cylinder turbo developing 408 hp, a seven-speed S tronic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive ensure thrilling dynamics along with high fuel efficiency.

Among the technological highlights are the large rotary pushbutton of the MMI that now includes the touch pad, MMI touch, which makes the already operation even more intuitive and will soon be introduced in series production at Audi. Holders for iPads are installed on the back of the front seat backrests. The door handles with their brushed-aluminum clasps are recessed flush with the door. When the driver touches them, they power-extend.

Further premiers included the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro - the first mass-produced hybrid model from Audi that makes use of two drive systems. Delivering 245 hp of system performance and 480 Nm of torque, its 2.0 TFSI gasoline engine and electric motor ensure sporty dynamics while achieving an average fuel consumption in the normal cycle (NEDC) of under 6.9 liters per 100 km. The sportiest hybrid SUV on the market can drive up to 100 km/h under electric power alone and covers about three kilometers locally emission-free at a speed of 60 km/h.

With the new RS 3 Sportback Audi also revealed the newest member of the dynamic Audi RS family. It’s turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine pumps out 340 hp and delivers 450 Nm of torque at just 9.1 liters of fuel per 100 km on average. The Audi RS 3 Sportback accelerates from a standing stop to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds – a best-in-class performance figure. A further highlight on the Audi stand is the A8 L Security, which meets the strictest guidelines in force for civilian vehicles, with a host of special safety features available in addition to its heavy armoring.

The Audi RS 3 and Q5 hybrid have not been confirmed for the Middle East yet.

Nissan India Micra Road Test

Nissan India had been a slow starter in India with only 2 models the Luxury Sedan Teana and the SUV X Trail both as CBUs for India. The Micra was the first small car that it launched for India and also set up a large manufacturing unit at Chennai jointly with Renault especially for the Micra. The Petrol Micra hit Indian roads a few months back is selling in decent numbers and Nissan is also exporting the Indian built Micras to many countries. Off late to play the number game in India every car model must have a Diesel variant and Nissan quickly realized this and got the Diesel version of the Micra. The Micra Diesel uses the tried and trusted 1.5 litre CRDI Diesel engine from its sibling the Mahindra-Renault Logan code named K9K. To know more read on the review of Nissan Micra Dci.

Nissan Micra Dci Exteriors

The Nissan Micra Dci from the outside is identical to the petrol sibling, its rather cute and looks very refreshing and has an sort of retro look to it. The Micras headlamps and the front end remind you of the Porsche, the cute pushed back rounded lights go with the overall rounded look. The large bumper up front looks sporty along with the air dams that go way down. A large round Nissan logo on the bonnet shouts its branding. The front grille is made up in two parts with a thick chrome strip running across Micras face. The side profile of the Nissan Micra Dci is very retro and has the classic round cut on the rear window quarter glass.

The round sloping roof and the rear end with its perfectly curved window and the slightly bulging tail lamps give it a Volkswagen Beetle kind of look. The rear as mentioned is very classy with the protruding tail lamps and a all new rear spoiler that the Diesel Micra gets. Also noteworthy here is the smart keyless entry where one can unlock the car without the keys by just pressing the button on the front door handle, provided you have the car remote with you, a real smart touch that even cars much bigger and expensive don’t have in India.

The Nissan Teana has this keyless entry feature. The roof also retains the boomerang shaped slits giving the top a aerodynamic touch. The other noticeable change is the addition of the 15 inch alloy wheels that help the drive in a big way, you will read about that in the drive part of my review. At the rear you get the dCI badging that proclaims this car as the Nissan Micra Diesel. Fit and finish on the outside is very good, the doors open wide aiding a comfortable entry-exit. The Micra looks smarter now with the upsized 15 inched alloys that go very well with the cars overall shape and design.

Nissan Micra Dci Interiors

The Nissan Micra Dci interiors also remain unchanged as compared to the petrol sibling. Interior of the Micra is very fresh and has a bright feel to it thanks to the use of light colors on the upholstery and dashboard plastics. The round theme is carried in the cabin and everything has a very round feel to it. The Instrument cluster is well designed and easy to read.

The MID or multi info display is placed in this cluster that tells you the trip meter, distance the car can travel with the diesel in the tank, overall average, and instant average of the car. The Steering now has the Nissan logo in chrome which the Petrol Micra still lacks, a fake metal plastic inserts on the steering and on the gear knob. The Climate control is again based on the round theme and looks very well designed.

The Nissan Micra Dci has a single glovebox and misses out on the extra glove box which is on the Petrol sibling has. MP3-FM radio comes as standard and the audio quality is very audible and clear and also has the AUX input port to connect your Ipod. The gear changer gets the fake metal touch and now feels much better to grip. Front seats are very comfortable but the driver seat misses out on the height adjust that the Petrol Micra has.

Rear seat is bench type with integrated headrests; these are not 60:40 split seats. Interiors are made of high quality material and the fabric used on the seats etc is also of good quality. The smart keyless start stop button is very clever touch so is the electric auto-fold mirrors on busy traffic city roads where you are always at the risk of touching the mirrors to a pedestrian or another vehicle.

Everything in here feels and works very well. A dead pedal-clutch footrest would have been more than welcome in here never the less the clutch is very light and not much foot pressure used to engage and change gears. Driver side airbag comes standard but the passenger side air bag is sorely missed. Overall the Nissan Micra Dci has a very roomy and fresh interiors among all other cars in its segment.

Nissan Micra Dci Engine – Drive

The clever thing that Nissan did was to utilize the Mahindra- Renault Logans Diesel engine on the Micra. This 1.5 litre CRDI engine codenamed K9K is an eight valve engine that produces 64 PS @ 4000rpm and generates 160Nm of torque as low as 2000rpm. The K9K engine is one of the most selling engines from the French car maker and has been doing an able duty on the Logans here in India.

This engine has the power to weight ratio advantage on the Micra as the Micra is much lighter than the Logan so performance and efficiency has drastically gone up. Crank the engine and the 1.5 dCI comes to life, the Diesel clatter is not very evident in the cabin thanks to the good job that the cabin noise dampers that Nissan has used. The engine is smooth and feels refined when revved.

Engage the first gear and the Nissan Micra Dci once on the move builds speed in a very sedate fashion, don’t expect instant pickup with the turbo kicking in but the Micra Diesel has a very linear power build up which is best experienced in the 2nd and the 3rd gear. Power is good enough and the pickup is good. Overtaking is easy and the Micra Diesel never feels out of breath. There is no turbo lag at any RPM as on a few 3 cylinder diesel small cars.

The drive feel is responsive and the Nissan Micra Dci sings away and crosses 100kmph easily on third gear. The upsized 15inch alloys also help in the drive quality and the car now feels very planted at all speeds. The Nissan Micra Dci touches the 100kmph speed barrier in about 15.3 seconds which is not bad at all. The gear shifts are positive and crisp and the ratios are tuned for a mix of city and highway driving styles. The suspension setup also remains ditto like that of the Petrol Micra, McPherson Sturt on the front and Torsion beams at rear iron out the bad roads that you put the Micra on.

The biggest USP that the Nissan Micra Dci has is the fuel efficiency figures that Nissan claims as the best in the segment. During my test run the Nissan Micra Dci returned with close to 22kmpl on the highway and close to 19kmpl on the city road conditions which is exemplary.

Verdict

With the Nissan Micra Dci, Nissan surely is taking the Indian market very seriously. The Micra was always a very good car and now with the able Diesel engine plunked in makes it a irresistible car with super high fuel efficiency figures that none of the competitors can match yet and smart innovative features like the keyless entry-exit and button start-stop which even cars much bigger and costlier than the Micra don’t have.

The Odyssey Touring grade comes equipped with a state-of-the-art 15GB memory Hard Disc Drive (HDD) audio system that can digitally store approx. 175 CDs. And the EX-L grade comes equipped with 2GB flash memory that can digitally store approx. 18 CDs, thus eliminating the need for a 6-CD changer.

Safety

An extensive list of safety equipment comes standard on every Odyssey. The Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is a Honda-exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. Powertrain

Powering the Odyssey is a robust, yet efficient 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM). To conserve fuel when power requirements are low, the VCM technology can allow the engine to operate using only three or four of its six cylinders as conditions permit. A six-speed automatic transmission, standard on the Odyssey Touring, helps it achieve a best-in-class city/highway fuel-economy. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard on the Odyssey LX and EX-L.

Chassis & Body

A long 3,000 mm wheelbase, wide track dimensions, advanced suspension design and features such as VSA with traction control contribute to the Odyssey's excellent overall handling. The Odyssey's hydraulic power-steering automatically increase the power assist at slow speeds, like while parking, and it also automatically reduces the power assist, like while on highway, so that the driver has more feedback.

Standard on the Odyssey LX and EX-L are 17-inch wheels, while 18-inch wheels are standard on the Odyssey Touring. The tires on all models feature low-rolling resistance construction to aid in maximizing fuel economy.

The 2011 Odyssey is extensively redesigned to become more lightweight and rigid allowing for the vehicle's high levels of safety, increased fuel economy, refined handling and a comfortable ride. Al Hosani Bags 10.5 Class Award at Yas Exotic Drag Racing

Abu Dhabi, 9 January 2011: Ali Al Hosani won the 10.5 Class Award in his twin-turbo Corvette C5 at the first Yas Exotic Drag Racing event of 2011 on Friday (7 January). Al Hosani recorded an elapsed time of 10.641 seconds and a terminal speed of 215.11 km/h, winning the race on a hole shot with a better reaction time. The runner-up was Sharif Ahmed with an elapsed time of 10.627 at 216.80 km/h.

The 11.5 Class saw Khalefa Al Remethi winning first place in a Jeep SRT8 with an elapsed time of 12.070 seconds at 190.26 km/h, with runner-up Ibrahim Al Katheeri recording a time of 12.081 seconds at 191.62 km/h, in another Jeep SRT8.

During the event, participants and spectators saw the world’s fastest three-seat Super Comp dragster shaking the drag strip at the hands of Yas Top Fuel ace and Chief Drag Racing Instructor Rod Fuller. Fuller offers passenger rides that last a fraction over six seconds at a terminal speed of 240 km/h.

Mohamed Ali Basha won the 13.5 Class in a Chevrolet Camaro with an elapsed time of 13.593 at 167.29 km/h. The runner-up was Sultan Al Zaabi in his Jeep SRT8 with an elapsed time of 13.295 and a speed of 163.28 km/h.

Suzuki GSXR 750 rider Toby Begendorf delivered an elapsed time of 10.872 seconds and a speed of 212.34 km/h in the 10.5 class – just hours after riding the same bike in a track day at Dubai Autodrome.

Rashed Al Qubaisi, Head of the Yas Drag Racing Centre, said: “Our congratulations go to all the winners. We are seeing increasing interest in the Exotic Drag Racing nights and the Open Drag Racing nights among the drag racing community. In particular, we look forward to seeing more bikes coming here to compete. Toby’s performance shows that the same bikes can shine on a circuit as well as on the drag strip.”
